Composer, curator, and activist Carlos Simon announces his first European position as Composer in Residence at The Concertgebouw for the 2026/27 season, where the esteemed venue will highlight his work through an exciting variety of performances.
Simon’s position commences with a performance of his Four Black American Dances by the Pittsburgh Symphony on September 7, and his new work The After Party, a song cycle for John Holiday, receives its European premiere with the Amsterdam Sinfonietta on December 6 (other parties including Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra anad Lincoln Center).
In the recital hall, the Arod Quartet will play Warmth from Other Suns on October 28, and the New European Ensemble will perform the European premiere of the Gardner Suite, co-commissioned by the Concertgebouw, on June 13 in a program curated by Simon.
The residency culminates in the European premiere of Simon’s seminal Good News Mass, in co-production with Holland Festival, with the North Netherlands Orchestra being joined by Gospel Choir and acclaimed soloists on June 9, 2027.
This residency is my first position in Europe, which is very exciting. I love taking my music to new places; the Concertgebouw is a dream in that regard. I’ve been to Amsterdam before, but this is different. These halls are considered a gold standard. I never thought my music could just be heard here.
